Peru HSP & Introvert Retreat

Experience the magnificent wonders of Machu Picchu and Peru’s Sacred Valley

April 19-27, 2024

1 Spot Available!

Join us on a 9-day / 8-night retreat into the cultural traditions and archaeological wonders of the Sacred Valley.

Come experience one of the 7 Wonders of the World, as well as lesser known gems of the Sacred Valley on a retreat that balances heartfelt connection with plenty of alone time to soak up your surroundings.

At a retreat center tucked into the heart of the Sacred Valley, we’ll greet the morning with enlivening yoga amidst the Andes Mountains, savor authentic flavors of Peru’s gastronomy, and enjoy peaceful hiking just outside our retreat.

Our days will offer a blend of cultural excursions and free time to explore or relax. We’ll enjoy a traditional Peruvian lunch at our guide’s farm, learn about vibrant weaving traditions, and visit the Pisac ruins where you’ll also have the option to hike a quiet section of the original Inca Trail.

Toward the end of the week, we’ll travel by train to the town closest to Machu Picchu where we’ll spend the night so that we can awaken before sunrise to watch the fog unveil Machu Picchu.

Along the way, we’ll be supporting education and food programs for Peruvian children, as both the retreat center and our guides work closely with their communities.

The Land & Space

Cusco (elev. 11,152 ft) is the former capital of the Inca empire and gateway to Machu Picchu. It is also the oldest continuously inhabited city on the continent. Its surrounding region, including the Sacred Valley, Inca Trail, and Machu Picchu, is rich with archaeological sites. You will fly into Cusco (CUZ), but we recommend visiting Cusco at the end of your stay after you’ve adapted to the elevation.

The Sacred Valley (9,420 ft) is a fertile valley stretching approximately 60 km east to west from the towns of Pisac to Ollantaytambo along the Urubamba River. Along with Cusco and Machu Picchu, it formed the heart of the Inca Empire. We will be staying just between Pisac and Ollantaytambo.

Machu Picchu (elev. 7,972 ft) is an ancient Inca citadel high in the Andes mountains. It was built in the 15th century and abandoned in the 16th century when the Spaniards arrived. The ruins were first discovered by a local farmer named Melchor Arteaga. Hiram Bingham was the American who revealed the site to the world in 1911. During our trip to Machu Picchu, you will have the option to hike to the top of Huayna Picchu, the mountain you see behind the ruins.

Munay Sonqo is a wellness retreat center nestled in an oasis of native plants and fruit trees and held by the strength of the surrounding mountains of Peru’s Sacred Valley. The center is built upon principles of ecological awareness and regenerative practices with its elaborate permaculture farms, waste water recycling, composting systems, and current transition to renewable solar energies. Proceeds from Munay Sonqo support its non-profit organization, Sach’a Munay, which works closely with local schools and communities to provide food and educational programs. Munay Sonqo Retreat Center is located in a remote part of the Sacred Valley about 1 hour, 30 minutes from Cusco.

Accommodations: Guest rooms are distributed among three houses on the property with each room being a reflection of the Peruvian culture of the Sacred Valley. The largest is Casa Blanca, which hosts the dining area and a shared living space with a fireplace. Casa Blanca has 6 rooms, most of which have their own bathroom. Casa Piscina has 3 rooms that share 2 bathrooms and a living area. The adobe bungalows of Casa Misky are newly constructed, private suites each with their own bathroom, kitchen, loft, and patio. See more here.

Food: Guests will be served local and international meals prepared with locally-grown ingredients, many of which come from Munay Sonqo’s organic farm. Meals offered will be vegetarian. Chicken and fish can be provided for a small fee if requested in advance.

Facilities: El Santuario is a private retreat space that enjoys all of the amenities offered on the main property, but has the advantage of being secluded and private to the group. It’s made up of three houses, a gathering space, lush gardens, massage rooms, temazcal (sweat lodge), cold plunge pool, and fire pit all under the stars. Munay Sonqo also has a cafe just a short walk up to the main property.

Having attended two retreats with Melissa, I can say her trips are outstanding opportunities for HSP/Introverts to enjoy amazing places, practice yoga, eat gourmet-level meals, participate in discussions–plus have solo time. The relaxed pace is so much more enjoyable than typical group travel. Melissa is a delightful leader and skilled yoga teacher, with a sensitive energy and care for each attendee.

Day 1

Arrive at Munay Sonqo: Munay Sonqo will help arrange your transfer from Cusco (about 1.5 hrs) and you may check in any time between 12:30 and 3:00 p.m. If you arrive earlier than this, Munay Sonqo has a cafe where you can relax. You’ll have the afternoon to settle in before our opening circle and gentle restorative yoga at 4:30. Our welcome dinner will be served at 7:00.

Day 2

Local Farm Visit & Pachamanca Lunch: We’ll wake up in the majestic Andes with sunrise yoga at 7:00a and breakfast at 8:30a. After breakfast, we’ll drive (30-40 min) to the farm of our guide, Valentin, for a leisurely walk to learn about the native plants and foods of the region. Then, we will share a traditional pachamanca (stew cooked in the earth!). We’ll have some downtime upon our return to the retreat center and then Melissa will guide a gentle yoga class before dinner.

Day 3

Free Time & Waterfall Hike: After yoga and breakfast, you’ll have time to relax. Around 11am, a local weaver from the Amaru community, Lucia, will come to the retreat center to demonstrate how the weavers spin alpaca wool, make dyes from plants, and use a backstrap loom. After lunch, you’ll have the afternoon to rest or take a short hike to the waterfall behind the retreat center. In the evening, we’ll have a reflection circle, which will be followed by gentle yoga and then dinner.

Day 4

Pisac Ruins: After yoga and breakfast (around 10am), we’ll drive to Pisac (30-40 min) to meet Flor, one of our guides. We’ll begin at terraced Inca ruins situated high on a mountain. Flor will explain the history and functions of the ruins. Then, you’ll have a chance to hike on a seldom-used original Inca trail, which is about a 1.5-hour hike downhill. This hike is full of surprises around each corner, passing through a tunnel that was built by the Incas as well as one of the largest Inca cemeteries. If you prefer not to hike, you’ll be transported down to the town to wander through the local handcraft market. We’ll arrive back to Munay Sonqo in the late afternoon. If time permits, we will have yoga before dinner.

Day 5

Free Day: After yoga and breakfast, the day is yours to fully relax. Some choose to sit back and read or get a massage. If you’re looking for an activity, we can help you organize adventures such as horseback riding, hiking options, etc. In the evening, we’ll have a reflection circle and gentle yoga before dinner.

Day 6

Ollantaytambo + Train to Aguas Calientes: Right after yoga and breakfast, we will head out with Flor to Ollantaytambo (1-hr drive) to visit the ancient ruins in this quaint town. You may either stay with Flor for a short guided tour or wander around on your own. You’ll have time to find a cafe for lunch before we take the train for 1hr, 45min to the town of Aguas Calientes, our base for Machu Picchu. Once we arrive, you will be free to relax and have an early dinner on your own.

Day 7

Machu Picchu: Our day starts early to arrive at Machu Picchu. We’lh have breakfast at our hotel at 4:30a and meet in the lobby at 5:30 to take the bus to Machu Picchu (20 min). Flor will guide our us and then you’ll have free time on your own. Those who want to climb the mountain behind Machu Picchu called Huayna Picchu will need to buy an add-on ticket and will hike from 10:00-12:00. Then, you’ll return on the bus to Aguas Calientes and have lunch before taking the train back to Ollantaytambo late afternoon. From Ollantaytambo to Munay Sonqo, we have a 1hr drive with dinner served upon our return.

Day 8

Rest + Recharge: We’ll return to waking up with yoga and our usual breakfast time. Then, the day is yours to relax. If there’s enough interest, we may coordinate a sound healing session. We’ll seal in the connections we’ve made this evening with a closing circle, gentle yoga class, last dinner together.

Day 9

Depart for Cusco: We’ll come together for one last yoga session. After breakfast, a group shuttle will take us to Cusco at 9:30am, which will get us to Cusco around 11:00/30. We recommend spending this final night in Cusco to visit the city and returning home the following day.

This was a wonderful opportunity for me to meet and connect with other introverts. It was so nice to have a retreat planned with introvert needs in mind. Melissa is a wonderful retreat organizer and leader, she truly created a safe place for the group.
Darlene O.

This retreat far exceeded my expectations. I didn’t expect to learn as much as I did about Peruvian culture in such a short time. It was nice to feel like I could truly be myself and I returned home with several new friends.
Carolee A.

Melissa is a compassionate person who is really good at what she does. For my first time traveling alone, I was in good hands. I’m realizing the benefits of when you travel in unfamiliar territory, you’re not quite the same person as when you left.

Passport & Visa

Peru requires a current passport that will be valid for a minimum of six (6) months after your travel dates. Peru does not require a special visa to enter for U.S. travelers. Please check the visa requirements for your home country.

We require you to provide us with a copy of your passport no later than November 30, 2023 in order to purchase Machu Picchu train, bus, and entrance tickets.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend the purchase of travel insurance. We don’t recommend a specific company or policy, but we’ve partnered with InsureMyTrip (affiliate link) as the best option to compare plans. They have thousands of travel insurance plans, as well as a recommendation engine to help travelers find the right plan. They will also provide support before, during, and after your trip if you should need anything, including help with a claim.

We recommend “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) coverage, which will cover your trip in the event you are unable or choose not to attend for any reason. CFAR insurance typically reimburses 50 or 75 percent of your trip cost and requires the following conditions:

  • Purchase the policy within 14-21 days of first trip payment.
  • Insure all prepaid and non-refundable travel expenses prior to departure.
  • Cancel more than 48-72 hours prior to your departure date.

Note that you will need to check the “Cancel for Any Reason” box to see policies. Read the policy terms. If you miss the window for CFAR coverage, you can still buy other policies.

Altitude & Activity Level

Every traveler is different with respect to how their bodies react to elevation change. Cusco has the highest altitude at 11,154 feet. Urubamba Valley is 9,420 feet and Machu Picchu is about 7,972 feet. We recommend traveling to the Sacred Valley upon arriving in Cusco and saving your visit in Cusco for the end after you’ve adjusted to the altitude.

Travelers may experience fatigue, sleeplessness, headaches, nausea, and shortness of breath during the first several days. This can be minimized by drinking liquids including coca tea, avoiding alcohol, and not overexerting yourself the first day. Your doctor may prescribe altitude medication to take before you arrive as a precaution. Over-the-counter altitude medication is available in Cusco. If you have any medical conditions, we strongly recommend that you discuss the effects of altitude with your physician before traveling.

It’s important to note that the effects of the altitude can make normal activities much more challenging. Machu Picchu can be challenging for some, as it has many stairs and is steep in some parts. We can take it slow to accommodate various physical conditions. The group activities we’ve planned are designed to be mild with options to add more moderate or challenging hikes.

Getting There & Away
You will fly into Cusco (CUZ) at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport. Flights from most major U.S. cities can entail 12-16 hours of travel with two stops on average and may cost $700-800 USD. If you have flexibility, you may fly to Lima and stay in their Wyndham Costa del Sol Airport Hotel to break up the travel. Then, you can purchase a domestic flight from Lima to Cusco. Please double check dates and times if you do this.

Arrival: Plan your travel so that your flight arrives in Cusco no later than 12:00p. on Day 1. You are responsible for the cost of your arrival transfer. Munay Sonqo Retreat Center can arrange a direct taxi to the retreat for $48.00 USD (1-4 people). We will provide you with instructions in your Pre-Departure Packet. You may check in between 12:30 and 3:00p. Should you arrive earlier, you can relax at Munay Sonqo’s cafe.

Departure: On Day 9, we will leave the retreat center at 9:30a. and arrive to Cusco by around 11:30 a.m. While you may be able to find a flight out that evening, we recommend spending the night in Cusco to explore the city. If you choose to fly out on Day 9, please book your departure for after 3:00p to be safe. The van will make a stop in the city center and the airport, if needed.

If your return travel falls outside of our group transfer, you will be responsible for your transportation costs.

Weather & Climate
November to April is considered to be the rainy season in the Sacred Valley. January receives the heaviest rain and rain is minimal in March and April, so you can expect little rain. When it does rain, it typically does not last all day and the green lush valleys are spectacular. Daytime temperatures in Fahrenheit are typically in the 60s/70s and nighttime temps can drop down to 40s/50s. Please pack accordingly.
Cusco Hotel Recommendations
Hotel Niños is a cute, modest boutique hotel that supports 600 Peruvian children with school and medical expenses. Both Niño Hotels (Meloc and Fierro) are good options, but we will prefer Fierro.

The possibility to extend your stay at Munay Sonqo Retreat may also exist. More details will follow in our Pre-Departure packet, which you will receive at registration.

We suggesting checking TripAdvisor or Airbnb for other options in the quieter neighborhood of San Blas, which has some nice shops and restaurants as well.
COVID-19 Policy

Peru no longer requires proof of vaccination or a COVID-19 test for entry. The U.S. no longer requires a negative test for re-entry. Check the requirements of your home country.

As pandemic conditions have changed, we are now following the policies put forth by the government of Peru and our local partners, which is subject to change by the time this trip takes place.

We ask that guests abide by the following:

  • Self-Monitoring – If you experience any symptoms of any kind of illness, we ask that you inform us, distance yourself, and wear a mask in closed spaces.
  • Masks – Travelers who are concerned about transmission, are welcome to wear masks.
  • Hygiene – We encourage you to wash your hands regularly throughout the retreat.

We are not responsible for delays or cancellations due to lack of proper travel documents, including proof of vaccination, COVID-19 test, and any other documents that may be required. We strongly recommend “Cancel for Any Reason” travel insurance to cover your expenses in the event you must cancel for any reason including COVID-19.
